New Zealand Warriors are set to sign former Wigan centre Anthony Gelling.
Gelling was recently granted a release from the Super League club and returned to his native New Zealand.
It’s understood that Gelling has trained with the New Zealand Warriors and is in talks to sign a one-year deal.
The centre was recently granted a release from the last 2 years of his contract on compassionate grounds. He returned to New Zealand to be with his girlfriend who is recovering from a car accident.
A talented centre or second rower, Gelling was born in New Zealand, he played under 20s for Sydney Roosters before he was sacked along with another teammate for defecating in a hotel room. He returned to New Zealand and played for NSW Cup team Auckland Vulcans.
Wigan picked him up at the end of the 2011 season. It was at Wigan where Gelling made his name. He played 114 games scoring 52 tries. Gelling said in an official statement, that the wake up call was when his girlfriend was in accident and Gelling couldn’t be at her side, this prompted his request for a release.
