Toronto Wolfpack chairman and CEO Bob Hunter has poured cold water on a report linking Sonny Bill Williams with a return to the NRL this year on a short-team deal.
On Monday The Sydney Morning Herald published a story claiming that NRL clubs are poised to lure stars such as Williams, Israel Folau, Quade Cooper and others down under for the shortened season that is set to start on May 28.
But Williams is contracted to Toronto until the end of next year and Hunter has denied claims the Kiwi cross-code star could go back to the NRL.
“We have no approaches about Sonny,” Hunter told rugbyleaguehub.com Long Reads.
“He remains in the UK and ready to play when Super League restarts up. Training, healthy and spending lots of time with his family.
“He’s under contract with us through the end of 2021.”
Williams joined the Wolfpack on a massive marquee contract at end of 2019 after the Rugby World Cup in Japan.
The 34-year-old has made five appearances for the Canadian club, which has yet to win a game this season after six rounds.
Super League was postponed on March 16 because of the Coronavirus and as of yet no restart date has been put forward.
Hunter said there has been no update from Super League on when the season might resume.
“Really it’s in the government’s hands both here in Canada and in the UK.”
