Exclusive: Wakefield Trinity have denied they are planning to bring former head of rugby John Kear back to the club in a new role.

A report today claimed the Super League side were lining up the return of the experienced head coach, who recently left his post at Bradford Bulls.

But Wakefield CEO Michael Carter said this is not the case.

“I don’t know where this story has come from,” Carter told rugbyleaguehub.com Long Reads.

“I spoke to John the day after he left Bradford to make sure that both him and his wife Dawn were OK given the circumstances and the fact that I would class us as close friends within the game.

“At no point did we talk about anything else, and we haven’t talked since.”

Kear coached Wakefield between 2006 and 2011, and then served as Trinity’s director of rugby between 2016 and 2017.

The 67-year-old departed from the Bulls last month by mutual consent.

Kear has been approached for comment.
