Exclusive: Kevin Proctor has described his sacking by Gold Coast Titans last year for vaping at half-time during an NRL game as “a load of shit”, but says he is out to prove his critics wrong in Super League.
Proctor was binned by the Titans in July after posting a video to Instagram of himself vaping in the dressing room at half-time during a match against the Bulldogs.
The Kiwi forward was sacked by Gold Coast, but has now landed in the UK with Wakefield Trinity.
Proctor admitted his exit from the club was “disappointing”, but believes the indiscretion was minor.
“It was disappointing, it was a kind of bittersweet ending,” he told rugbyleaguehub.com Long Reads.
“I didn’t leave on the best terms. But to be honest it was a load of shit… it wasn’t that much [the vaping].
“But hey it is what it is. I’ve never had this much time off.
“This is my 16th year, and usually it’s only eight to 10 weeks off. So it’s been a good thing in that time off let me spend more time with my kids and do things with them, like dropping my kids off at school.
“So I guess it’s been a blessing in disguise.”
The New Zealander won an NRL grand final with Melbourne Storm in 2012 and has played 22 times for the Kiwis.
Wakefield kick off their Super League next week against Catalans and Proctor is keen to hit the ground running with his new team.
The back-rower is living just outside Leeds and is enjoying his new surroundings.
“I’ve wanted to come to Super League for ages, but leaving my girls when they were so young was hard,” the 33-year-old said.
“But they’re old enough now to understand.
“I’m looking forward to it.
“I’ve played in some great teams but these guys are just as good here. It’s more about mindset that we can actually win.”
