WHILE the rugby league world showered him with praise after a try-scoring outing in the qualifying final loss to Melbourne, Canterbury interchange Toby Sexton declared: “I’ve got to be better”
The performance of the Catalans-bound 24-year-old was one of the positives for the Bulldogs in their 24-16 defeat, with captain Stephen Crichton (ankle) likely out for the rest of the play-offs.
“His first half in particular, he came on and made a big diffeence with his energy,” said coach Cameron Ciraldo.
“Just his confidence to go out there and play a little bit of an unfamiliar position … he was on the left there, he did really well.”
Admitting he didn’t expect to be thrown into the game so early, Sexton told ABC: “At a crucial moment I kicked out on the full and I gave a bit of field position so I’ve got to be better than that in big moments.
“But it was nice to play a bit of footy again.
“A lot of adversity tonight. We gave ourselves chances to win but couldn’t quite do it.
“We lost at the end of the day and in finals time it’s just win or lose so it’s a pretty tough one to swallow.”
Sexton told Nine: “Four or five weeks ago when I got dropped, I thought there was a fair chance I wouldn’t play for the Dogs again.”
