Exclusive: Sheffield Eagles’ plans to build a new stadium in Meadowhead are in serious doubt, with the club considering other sites.

Plans for the Eagles and football club Sheffield FC, both owned by businessman Jeremy Levine, to build and share a 5,000-capacity community stadium at the former Sheffield Transport Sports Club in Meadhowhead were first announced at the end of 2023, with an application submitted in March 2024.

But the stadium bid has faced delays and strong opposition, rugbyleaguehub.com Long Reads understands, and appears highly unlikely to progress at this stage.

According to The Sheffield Star, Sheffield Council is still assessing the planning application for the Meadowhead site, with no date yet set for a decision, despite the application being made nearly two years ago.

It is believed the Eagles are considering other sites for a new stadium, with one in the city on Woodbourn Road understood to be highly favourable.

The Woodbourn Road site includes the City Athletics Stadium and adjacent grassland.

This site is roughly half a mile from the Steel City Stadium at Olympic Legacy Park, where the Championship side currently play their home matches.

The Steel City Stadium has a capacity of 2,000 and only one small stand of seats.

The Eagles moved there in 2018 after the Don Valley Stadium was torn down and they played home matches in Rotherham, Doncaster and Wakefield.
