IT’S not quite Payne Haas – arguably the best player in the world – changing clubs but Mitch Barnett’s decision to leave the New Zealand Warriors is big news nonetheless.

The Taree-born 31-year-old has played three Tests for Australia and two Origins for NSW and is now on the open market, with Brisbane mentioned as a possible new home – as a replacement for Haas.

Explaining his decision to ask for an early release, Barnett made reference to his child’s need for constant medical treatment, which exacerbates the desite to be around family back in Australia.

“It’s extremely hard coming to this decision,” Barnett told News Limited.

“The decision I’ve made is the one that’s best for my family. This is based purely on our child’s medical needs and our need to be back around family going forward.

“I’m a father and husband before a footballer and that’s why, ultimately, I’m extremely comfortable with the decision.”

The Warriors say they want to be compensated in the form of players rather than cash.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, CEO Cameron George said: “Mitch and his agent know very clearly that whilst we’ve been completely considerate and understanding of this situation in agreeing to release him, there is a business component to it.

“And that is we expect to be compensated in the form of a player or two for allowing Mitch to go home from the club that shows interest. We will work through that process.”

Newcastle, Manly, Parramatta and Cronulla have joined the Broncos in being linked to the experienced forward.
