RECENT NRL rule changes have prompted some old school fans to tear out their hair – but it caused North Queensland forward Thomas Mikaele to find a tape measure.
Mikaele was a star of the Cowboys’ 28-12 win over Canterbury on Thursday with the Auckland born star in the best form of a career that’s taken him to Wests Tigers, Gold Coast and two stints at Warrington.
“He’s dropped eight kilos,” coach Todd Payten revealed.
“He’s been really consistent for us this year, it was really disappointing to lose him for three weeks after Vegas.”
Mikaele, 28, picked up a knee injury in Las Vegas at the start of a season that his been marked by high scoring games as a result of six-agains and other rule tweaks.
Payten continued: “I saw how hard he worked during the pre-season. He’s evolved with the game, understanding that being 120-odd kilos is really difficult with the changes.
“Through hard word, dedication, professionalism, he’s got his weight down. He’s kept it down and you can see the rewards.
“I’m happy for him.”
