MULTIPLE Premiership-winning coach Ivan Cleary has announced he will stand down at the end of next season.

In a succession that has been carefully concieled at Penrith until an announcement this week, Cleary will be replaced by his assistant Peter Wallace in 2028. Wallace has signed a three year contract.

“(Cleary) will stay connected to the Panthers beyond 2027, with discussions ongoing around an advisory role in areas such as culture and leadership,” the club said in a statement.

“Cleary has also confirmed he does not intend to pursue another first grade coaching role beyond his current Panthers contract.

“The succession plan reflects the Panthers’ commitment to stability, continuity and sustained success.

“The club believes the transition provides the strongest possible foundation for the next chapter of Panthers football, ensuring the standards, culture and leadership that have defined the club’s recent success continue well into the future.”

Cleary said at a media conference: “I have no interest in coaching another NRL club. If someone thought I was worthy of a rep job, I’d consider that.

“I’ve been a player or a coach for 35 years.

“It is more like a lifestyle than a job, so I’m definitely looking to branch out and use my skills, my knowledge and experience in other areas.
