JOHN Cartwright, who left Hull FC mid-season after being told he was unwanted next year, will take the reigns at Catalans for the rest of the season.

The Perpignan club announced the appointment this afternoon, the former Australia international to take over from caretaker coach Ryan Sheridan.

Sheridan only got the job when head coach Joel Tomkins departed for personal reasons more than a month ago.

Hull FC issued a statement that read: “Hull FC can confirm that John Cartwright has been released from the remainder of his contract with immediate effect.

Cartwright stepped away from his duties as head coach in April, while remaining an employee of the club and under contract until the end of the current season; he has now been released from his contract to allow him to take up an opportunity with another Betfred Super League club.

“The club once again would like to place on record its thanks for John’s contributions during his time with Hull FC and wish him the best of luck for his future endeavours in the sport.”

Cartwright was quoted on the club’s website as saying:  “I am really looking forward to the rest of the season with Catalans.

“It came totally out of the blue which makes it all the more exciting. Can’t thank Bernard Guasch, chairman) enough for this opportunity.”

Sheridan will go back to being an assistant, joining Michael McIllorum and Mitchell Pearce.

Catalans’ last start was a dismal 58-10 defeat at the hands of Wakefield.
