AUSTRALIAN Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’Landys will fill in as NRL chief executive after Andrew Abdo resigned today (Monday).

Abdo, 47, has been in the role since April 2020 but will leave on July 15 to take over at Tennis Australia.

V’Landys will take long service leave from his other job as CEO of Racing NSW to fill the executive role vacated by Abdo.

But they hope to have a new TV deal in place before the South African’s departure.

Asked at a media conference about the possibility of taking over as an all-powerful executive chairman, V’Landys said: “It’s not allowable under the constitution at the moment, so the clubs would have to change the constitution for that to happen.

“But … today’s about Andrew, it’s not about me. It’s about the great loss that we’re suffering today with Andrew leaving to go to Tennis Australia.

“The only real good thing is he’s going to Melbourne.”

V’landys said he would not stand down as chairman to be permanent CEO
