HUDDERSFIELD coach Jim Lenihan has admitted he prioritised processes since his arrival to such an extent there were times “we haven’t even tried to win games”.
The Giants upset play-offs-bound Leigh 30-18 on Friday night and have now won five of their last six matches to sit third-last on the table with seven wins and 14 Losses.
“At the back end of the year, we haven’t once tried to worry about the table,” Lenahan said “We haven’t once tried to worry about being last.
“As soon as we start giving ourselves a finish line where we start trying to find it, it seems tp create a situation where we are more worried about that than the actual game.
“We’ve simplified the game to ourselves. We’ve worked hard on bits and processes within the game, even parts of it where we haven’t even tried to win games this year.
“We’ve just measured our ability to get parts of our detail really well.
“That’s all we’re going to do next season.”
Despite their recent record going into the next-round clash with world champions Hull KR,, Lenihan laughed off any suggestion Huddersfield were becoming a juggernaut.
“Once we had some wins we talked about really trying to knock over a top six side,” he explained.
“I think we’ve taken a step forward in our physicality. I also think we’ve taken a step forward in our mentality in terms of how we think about the game and what’s important to us.
“There’s no doubt we’re still down the bottom of the table. We’ve still got a lot of work to do to even be mid-table, let alone be a top six side.”
