IN the wake of their one-point grand final win over Newcastle on Sunday, Sydney Roosters players have let slip a couple of motivational concepts used by coach Trent Robinson.
Second rower Siua Wong says the Tricolours prepared themselves to wear down opposition – as they did at Accor Stadium against the Knights – by comparing their strategy to “pounding the rock”.
And very much on the same theme, prop Nat Butcher said Robinson encouraged them to envisage two scoreboards: the one with points and the one with the physical toll they had inflicted on the opposition.
Wong, who will continue his season int he World Cup with Tonga, told 2GB: “It’s been awesome – we’ve had this theme of pounding the rock this year and I felt that’s what our season looked like: just chipping away each game, each moment.
“I’m just very blessed and happy.”
Butcher, meanwhile, said: “We often speak about two scoreboards: the actual scoreboard and then also the physical scoreboard.
“Even though we were losing on the scoreboard, we felt like we were dominating the physical scoreboard.
“And we knew things were going to turn around and we would reap those rewards in the second half.”
The Roosters celebrated their dual premiership wins – they also took out the NRLW – with a fan day at the SCG at the start of the week.
On Wednesday, winger Daniel Tupou announced his retirement.
