Burgess: I don’t know what was worse, the weather or the game

Warrington Wolves ensured they stayed in the hunt for the Betfred Super League play-offs with a 24-12 victory away to struggling Salford Red Devils on Friday night; the hosts led 8-6 after half an hour, but the Betfred Challenge Cup runners-up were able to rally and make it back-to-back wins; Sam Burgess and Ben Currie both admitted Warrington were below the standards they need to set if they are to be in the mix for a grand final place

SAM Burgess blasted Warrington Wolves’ display as they kept their play-off hopes flickering with 24-12 win away to Betfred Super League strugglers Salford Red Devils.

The Wolves trailed 8-6 at the half-hour mark, but managed to scrap their way to victory in wet conditions at Salford Community Stadium to close to within a point of sixth-placed Hull FC.

That made it back-to-back wins in Super League for the Betfred Challenge Cup runners-up, but head coach Burgess was unhappy with what his side served up against a Salford side with just one league win to their name so far in 2025.

“I don’t know what was worse, the weather or the game,” Burgess told Sky Sports.

“We to work hard [to make the play-offs] because what we put forward there was simply not good enough.

“The dream is still alive, but this performance was a bit of a scrap on some of our efforts over the last little while.”

Warrington have matches against two more of the competition’s underperformers coming up in Catalans Dragons and Castleford Tigers, followed by high-flyers Leigh Leopards and Wigan Warriors.

Back row Ben Currie, who was named player of a match after making 43 tackles and providing an assist plus averaging nine metres per carry while making two tackle busts and one clean break, admitted the Wolves need to step up if they are to be in the play-off mix at the end of the season.

“It wasn’t at our standards, so at least we got the win,” Currie told Sky Sports. “We’ll move on and hopefully we’ll be better.

“Obviously we’re trying to chase that top six down and back-to-back wins will help us do that.

“We’ve got a few fixtures before we get a break which we’d like to tick off, then we’ll see where we’re really at in the league.

“As long as there’s a chance, the flame will always be flickering.”
