Exclusive: Jason Harborow has left his role as an advisor to Nigel Wood’s strategic review group.

Harborow, an ex-RLF operations director who is also a current board member of Swinton Lions, had been a key supporter to Wood and his committee.

Harborow presented the group’s findings to the Rugby League Council at Wakefield in July, and presented to the Super League clubs at the expansion meeting at Headingley. You can read the deck that was presented to Council here.

He worked as an advisor to Wood and to Rob Hicks.

However, rugbyleaguehub.com Long Reads understands Harborow ended his association with Wood’s group last month.

Harborow told rugbyleaguehub.com Long Reads: “I valued advising the Strategic Review Group and working with club owners, CEOs and the RFL chair.

“The next phase arrangements weren’t at the level required or anticipated, so it was the right time to step back.

“For rugby league to be successful it needs expert input to grow and thrive, moving beyond governance and structure to become a world-leading entertainment product that attracts new fans and investment.

“I would love to help the sport in the future when the focus shifts in that direction.”

During his career Harborow has advised sports organisations and governments in the Middle East.

Despite speculation that he could bring Middle Eastern investment into UK rugby league, rugbyleaguehub.com Long Reads understands Harborow has never been tasked with that role.

The RFL has been approached for comment.
