PERTH Bears have had a big 24 hours in recruitment with the signatures of Melbourne pair Tyran Wishart and Nick Meaney – and likely Ireland international James McDonnell.

The signings of utility Wishart and goal-kicking centre Meaney were unveiled on Saturday morning Australian time, with quotes from both players provided to the official NRL website by the club.

Then English fans woke up to the news that 25-year-old forward McDonnell would be leaving at the end of the 2026 season when his contract is up to play in the NRL.

The Bears join the competition next year.

Rhinos sporting director Ian Blease said: “When we agreed a contract extension with James back in April last year, we knew James’s ambitions as a player, just like when he left his hometown club at Wigan to gain regular rugby at Leigh and then came across to Leeds to make a name for himself at the Rhinos.

“He has tremendous self belief and drive, which as a club, we have benefitted from in recent years.

“I know he will give his all this season before moving on. We have both agreed to make a decision as early as possible in the year so we can plan for 2027 and I am grateful that James has been up front at the earliest opportunity.

“He had an outstanding season in 2025 and I am expecting even better in 2026.”

Wishart, 26, said: “I’m really excited about the challenge of being a part of a new team and creating a legacy for the Perth Bears, as well as representing the past players and fans of the Bears and Reds franchises.

“There is already so much buzz about the Perth Bears and I’m excited to have the opportunity to be a part of it.”

Meaney, 28, added: “The Perth Bears provide a unique chance for my family and I to move to Western Australia and be a part of a new club that is essentially starting from scratch.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for me to help build the Bears but also set up my young family.

“My focus is going one better with the Storm this year; but in 2027 I’ll be ready to go for the Bears.”

Leeds coach Brad Arthur provided quotes to his club about the loss of McDonnell.

“It is disappointing to lose James for 2027 but there is a long time to go between now and then.

“James is a great example, particularly for our younger players, of where hard work and dedication can take you.

“For those in the squad, they know there is a spot up for grabs next year and that should drive them on and likewise on Ian’s recent visit to Australia, there was a lot of interest from players about what we are building here in the Rhinos so I have ever confidence we can continue to build a strong squad for the future.”

Finally, Bears coach Mal Meninga spoke specifically about the recruitment of Wishart and Meaney.

“Tyran and Nick are exceptional players that will bring a wealth of experience and leadership to our club,” he said.

“I am absolutely thrilled to welcome them to the Perth Bears.

“Tyran’s energy and effort across all levels of his game make him a player that others want to play with.

“He is highly skilled, tough as nails and will set the standards for us both on and off the field.

“Nick provides us with creativity and spark in attack and is also an excellent defender.

“He can play multiple positions in the backline, is an exceptional goalkicker and like Tyran will be a leader at our club.

“Above all, Tyran and Nick are exceptional people who will help us set the standards for Perth Bears for 2027 and beyond.”
