The former chief executive of the RFL Ralph Rimmer and its former chief regulatory officer Karen Moorhouse will be paid £245,000 by the governing body as part of their severance package, according to the RFL’s 2022 Annual Report.

The RFL posted a loss before tax of £1.022 million in 2022, which it put down to rising insurance costs, ticketing revenues being below expectations for events such as the Challenge Cup final, the restructuring of its management ranks following realignment and the impact of the 2021 World Cup.

The report states that £245,000 was provided for Rimmer and Moorhouse, despite both deciding to stand down in December.

“Director remuneration increased from £455k in 2021 to £787k in 2022,” the report reads.

“It should be noted that this total includes a provision of £245k for the compensation for loss of office for the former Chief Executive Officer and Chief Regulatory Officer.”

The report reveals that the RFL has gone from having £15.48 million in cash at the bank in 2021 to £7.87 million in 2022.

While government funding from Sport England for the RFL has increased from £8.3 million in 2021 to £11 million in 2021, the governing body still lost money. Its operating costs have gone up, from £10 million to £15 million in the past 12 months, while staff costs have risen £6.8 million to £7.6 million in 2022.

Overall broadcast income for rugby league decreased from £9.434 million in 2021 to £7.839 million in 2022, a drop of 17 per cent.

There was also a decrease in the amount of money going to clubs, from £8.356 million to £5.278 million. The report states: “This relates in the main to the reduction in distributions to Championship and League 1 Clubs as a result of the reduced broadcast revenues into the sport in 2022 when compared to 2021.”

The statements include the financial results of both the RFL and the 2021 World Cup.
