AN arrest has reportedly been made after a 17-year-old suffered serious head injuries in the aftermath of the Warrington-Widnes pre-season game on Friday.
Play was briefly stopped late in the Wolves’ 50-12 win over the Vikings at Halliwell Jones Stadium, with police investigating the entire affair and statements being issued by the clubs and Rugby Football League.
But in a further development late on Saturday afternoon, the Warrington Guardian reported that as a result of a fight outside the ground, an arrest had been made.
Like his alleged victim, the suspect – from Widnes – is 17.
Shortly before the arrest, Cheshire Police issued a statement to the newspaper which read: “Detectives are investigating disorder at the Halliwell Jones Stadium during the game between Warrington Wolves and Widnes Vikings on Friday, January 9.
“Shortly after the match, at around 9.23pm, a fight broke out on Winwick Road, leaving one boy seriously injured.
“The 17-year-old victim was taken to hospital to be treated.
“A number of witnesses have been spoken to, and enquiries are continuing.”
The RFL said: “The RFL is aware of events that took place at the game between Warrington Wolves and Widnes Vikings last night.
“The RFL does not condone such behaviour and will speak with both clubs, following which a thorough investigation will be undertaken.”
Warrington said: “Warrington Wolves are aware of an incident involving one of our supporters that occurred last night, who was taken to hospital and is currently receiving medical care.
“We are offering our full support to the family and are working closely with the police, and Widnes Vikings in relation to the incident.”
And Widnes added: “Our thoughts are with the individual involved and their family at this time.”
