CANTERBURY star Matt Burton has been placed on standby by New South Wales ahead of Origin I – but has hinted he would not have picked himself.
Burton joins Laurie Daley’s Blues after half Mitch Moses suffered hamstring soreness at training on Monday. The series against Queensland opens at Accor Stadium tomorrow (Wednesday).
“I’ve been disappointed in the way I’ve been performing the last couple of weeks,” Burton told 2GB in the wake of the Bulldogs’ drought-breaking 30-20 win over Melbourne on Friday.
“We had a few out so I had to stand up and I’m happy to get the result.”
Moses will have scans today (Tuesday) to determine if the concern over his hamstring is justified.
Speaking on Triple M, Burton added: “Running the ball, it’s a big attribute of mine and I’ve been lacking it the last couple of weeks.
“But I feel like our attack just clicked. I don’t know what it was but I feel like we were connected.
“We’ve been building that for a few weeks. The scoreboard just hasn’t shown it.
“We’ve been ripping in at training and doing our best to turn it around. It’s been a tough couple of weeks for everyone.
“We never dropped our heads. We just believed the whole time and we showed what we can do.”
