Leeds Rhinos CEO Gary Hetherington says the 2020 Super League season will be completed at some stage, despite the current shutdown thanks to the Coronavirus.

Play has been halted and as yet there are no indications when the season will resume.

There are fears the rest of the campaign could be scrapped entirely, but Hethertington is confident the season will be finished.

“We will certainly complete the season, we’ve got a committment throughout the game to do that,” he said.

“We’ve got flexibility as well, our season could run right until the end of this year, but it could even run into next year if it had to do.

“Obviously we want to start as soon as possible, we have to be ready to start as soon as we can.

“That may be as late as September, as an example, and if it is we have to be on hand to do that.”

Hetherington admitted as a business his club is facing a major challenge.

“We’re coping as best we can. All our players and most of our staff are cocooned at home,” he said.

“The next three months we’ve got significant liabilities. We’ve made a pledge to keep all our players and indeed our staff in employment, but our income streams have dried up.

“So we’re living off the income that we’ve already received from season ticket holders, sponsors etc and their comtinued support is absolutely crucial at this time.”
