Warrington Wolves CEO Karl Fitzpatrick has defended the club’s signing of rugby league great Greg Inglis.
Inglis will come out of retirement to join Warrington in 2021 on a one-year contract.
The 33-year-old, who has battled depression, retired in April 2019.
His last game of NRL was in March two years ago and the fullback faced shoulder and knee issues.
“It’s a risk, but it’s a calculated risk,” Fitzpatrick told rugbyleaguehub.com Long Reads.
“Greg looks refreshed and healthy. He will arrive in the UK in December.”
Fitzpatrick said Inglis did not retire because of his shoulder injury and that the Australian was not taking up a marquee spot.
The former Kangaroos and Queensland star recently revealed he is bipolar.
Inglis played 39 Tests for Australia, won 10 State of Origin series with the Maroons and won grand finals with Melbourne and South Sydney.
He played 15 years in the NRL and helped the Kangaroos claim the World Cup in 2013.
Warrington have made a number of high-profile signings in recent seasons in Luther Burrell, Gareth Widdop and Blake Austin.
‘Greg Inglis’ was trending second in the UK on Twitter after the signing was announced.
“We’re like Donald Trump – we want to put the Super back in Super League,” Fitzpatrick said.
