IF his genes have anything to say about it, it’s the start of a wonderful career – in refereeing.
Called up for Nene MacDonald at 11.30am yesterday via a phone call from coach Paul Rowley, teenage winger Jack Campbell scored two tries and saved a couple more as St Helens returned to the winners list, 34-18 over Catalans at Brewdog Stadium.
He might have a long career in front of him – and not just as a player. Dad Chris played at Warrington, Rochdale, Whitehaven and Oldham before taking up the whistle while grandad played for Saints before refereeing the 1994 Challenge Cup final.
“They wanted me to play Super League forever – I’m glad I’ve finally done it for them,” the 18-year-old told Sky Sports.
“My dad and my grandad both reffed, both played – (they) love rugby league to be honest.
“It’s just unbelievable – half 11 this morning, I got a call from Rowles. It’s mad. I couldn’t believe it, to be honest.
“The most unexpected call I ever had but … buzzing.
“We went out there second half, we just completely dominated it. It’s just what we wanted to do, bounce back from last week.
“Yeah, I’m a fullback, me. Not played on the wing for God knows how long. But (I) enjoyed it tonight, loved every minute of it.”
When it came to sporting a visible “buzz” after the game, Campbell was arguably outdone by his coach.
“I loved you giving the man of the match to young Campbell – I thought he was fantastic,” Rowley told Sky Sports.
“You ring these young lads and you think they’re gonna be nervous and stuck for words. I’m probably more nervous speaking to him than he was receiving the phone call.
“Sometimes it’s better not to think about it so the last-minute call-up works better in the finals.
“He was fantastic, so brave.”
