PARRAMATTA five-eighth Ronald Volkman has revealed match-winner Mitchell Moses instruction to his team-mates at the end of regulation time last Friday: ‘leave it to me’.
Moses kicked the winning overtime field goal in a 33-30 win over North Queensland at QCB Stadium on Friday, the bizarre scoreline delivered when Volkman kicked penalty goal in response to his half being ‘clipped’ late after slotting home the one point.
“He’s a huge impact,” Volkman, 22, told Triple M Townsville.
“He’s the type of leader to lead by example and he does that week-in and week-out – whether it does it at training, off the field or on the field … (but) … especially when it comes to the game.
“As you saw there, got into a huddle, put us all together and told us what we needed to do.
“He made it very clear and he basically told us to leave it to him.”
Volkman was left fizzing by a contest that saw the Eels spoil Jason Taumalolo’s party held to celebrate him becoming the Cowboys’ most-capped player.
“The emotions were high, adrenaline was high as well – especially going into extra time,” the Samoa international said.
“It’s my first extra time, the crowd was pumping as well. The pressure was definitely on. When you’ve got players like Junior Paulo in the middle, Mitchell Moses just icing games like that, it makes it pretty easy for me to do my job.
“When you’ve got a coach like Jason Ryles, he instils a lot of confidence in us boys. Whoever comes up, he puts a lot of confidence in us to do a role and a job and we were confident we could come up with those two points.
“You sort of saw that at the end there.”
Parramatta (4-6) plays Melbourne on Saturday in Magic Round.
