NEW England coach Brian McDermott has named a 38-man performance squad for the World Cup, of which just under a quarter were born overseas.

The main news items from the list will be the return of Jake Connor and the call-ups of Auckland-born Wakefield forward Caleb Hamlin-Uele and NRL players Jayden Brailey, Billy Smith and Ben Talty.

But not all foreign-born players were from the likes of Sydney and Auckland.

Winger Tom Johnstone was born in Germany, forward Mikolaj Oledzki in Poland and prop Ethan Havard in Bulgaria.

McDermott made no secret of his determination to use more heritage players from the NRL, adding to AJ Brimson and Victor Radley.

Dropped from the team beaten 30-8 by Australia in the Third Test at Headingley last November are winger Joe Burgess and centre Harry Newman. Out injured is forward Matty Lees.

Utility Kallum Watkins is in line to play in his fourth World Cup.
