Peters spray for Lewis after costly sinbin

Hull KR head coach Willie Peters blasted Mikey Lewis as letting down his team-mates following his costly sinbinning in Thursday's 19-18 defeat to York Knights; the reigning Super League champions were 12 points up in the season opener when Lewis was shown a yellow card for an off-the-ball trip on York's Liam Harris; the Robins now face a nervous wait to see if the England halfback will face further disciplinary action ahead of next Thursday's World Club Challenge against Brisbane Broncos

WILLIE Peters put Mikey Lewis on blast following the Hull KR star’s costly sinbinning in their shock 19-18 defeat to promoted York Knights.

The reigning Super League champions were leading 18-6 in Thursday’s Super League season opener at the LNER Community Stadium when Lewis was shown a yellow card for an off-the-ball trip on York’s Liam Harris.

The Knights duly took advantage of temporarily having the extra man to claw their way back into the contest before Ata Hingano landed a drop goal to seal a historic victory for the promoted side, and Hull KR head coach Peters was left annoyed by his halfback’s actions.

“He let his team-mates down and he needs to learn from it,” Peters, who faces a nervous wait to discover whether Monday’s match review panel will take further disciplinary action against Lewis ahead of the World Club Challenge clash with Brisbane Broncos, told Sky Sports.

“You’ll have to ask him [what he was thinking], but he’ll have to learn from it that’s for sure.

“We’ve had a good chat as a team and he’s owned a few things, but actions count.

“He needs to action off the back of that and make sure he doesn’t let his team-mates down like that again.”

It is not the first time the petulant side of Lewis’ game has reared its head, although it seemed to be something the 24-year-old was eradicating after winning Man of Steel in 2024 and then playing a starring role in Hull KR’s treble-winning 2025 campaign.

Peters backed the England international to avoid a repeat, but acknowledged he still has work to do to make sure that is the case.

“It was there tonight and he’ll keep working on it, I know he will,” Peters said.

“But we’re also not going to hide from the fact it was a silly play.

“It’s been in his game in the past, and we’ll work on it to make sure we get it out of his game.”
