THE futures of two Hull FC veterans were discussed late last night after the Airlie Birds finished St Helens’ run of more than 60 years without missing the play-offs.
The 32-18 result means it will take a small miracle for Saints, who dispensed with the services of coach Paul Rowley mid-season, to make the post-season this year. They last missed out at the beginning of the 1960s.
Skipper Aidan Sezer joined Hull FC to work with good friend John Cartwright but he, too, departed that role mid-season.
“‘I’m not to sure yet,” Sezer said when asked by Sky Sports about his future.
“At my ripe old age of 35 I take every game as it comes so I’ve still got a contract for next year.
“We’ll just see how that plays out.”
Reflecting on a season in which the Black and Whites have been rooted near the bottom of the table, Sezer said: “I’m not going to shy away from it: it has been tough at times.
“You’d like to think as a professional rugby league player you can narrow your focus and turn up and play but some things have been played out externally and that’s been disappointing.
“But we’ve got a tight bunch of boys. I love these boys. I love the fanbase. I love representing this club.”
It was reported before the game that New Zealand prop Ese Ese would be leaving immediately.
Caretaker coach Andy Last said when asked if he could shed any light on the matter: “I can’t, that’s the first I’ve heard of that.
“He played really well tonight.
“I can’t confirm or deny any of that.
“He’s contracted until 2030, so that would suggest he’s got to be with Hull FC for the long-term.
“There’s been no talks of that regard to me.”
