Super League won’t be changing its name in 2024 but a new brand for the premier English competition hasn’t been completely abandoned, according to RL Commercial managing director Rhodri Jones.
RL Commercial, the RFL and IMG have been considering renaming Super League and revamping its brand for some time.
But Jones has admitted there will be no changes made for next year, because of delayed broadcast talks and extending BetFred as the title sponsor for another three years.
“It was on the table [a change], and I wouldn’t say it’s off the table, but it’s not something we’re going to look at doing for 2024,” Jones told reporters.Â
“Two bits really – one around the length of time it took us to finalise the broadcast deal.Â
“It didn’t feel like we could start the renaming of a competition while we were going through those negotiations.Â
“And obviously, we’ve tied in a title sponsor for the Super League competition for the next three years.Â
“Immediately, no there’s no changes to the Super League competition but it doesn’t mean we’ve taken it off the table, it might just stay on the table for a bit longer.”
England’s top flight was rebranded as ‘Super League’ in 1996.Â
However, there are now a number of elite sporting competitions that use the words ‘Super League’ in their title such as the women’s football Super League in the UK, the proposed European football Super League, the Cricket Men’s World Cup Super League, the Netball Super League, and football’s Super League Greece and Indian Super League, among others.
