Rugby League Commercial managing director Rhodri Jones has explained Super League’s new marketing tagline of ‘There’s nothing like League’, stating that the omission of the word ‘Rugby’ in their advertising is not deliberate.

The new ad campaign for the 2023 Super League season launched on Thursday night. You can watch it here.

In the campaign the line of ‘There’s nothing like League’ is used.

With rugby union increasingly using just the word ‘Rugby’ to describe itself, for example the international governing body is called World Rugby, some have questioned whether UK rugby league officials plan to promote the sport simply as ‘League’ going forward for more differentiation.

Super League used an ad campaign of ‘We Play League’, with an Amazon series of the same name, in 2020.

But Jones has denied dropping ‘Rugby’ from their promotional material was done on purpose.

“It’s not deliberate, that was the best fit,” he said.

“That was the best caption or strapline that came up.

“There’s no intention to drop the word ‘Rugby’, that’s just the way it came out.”

IMG and Rugby League Commercial are currently evaluating the name of ‘Super League’ to describe the elite competition in the UK.

Reports have suggested there is a big push to rebrand and move away from the Super League moniker, which has been used since 1996, and come up with something different as now several other sports now utilise the phrase ‘Super League such as women’s football and netball.
