Salford coach Paul Rowley branded his side’s 32-6 loss to Wakefield “the worst performance since I’ve been in charge”.
The Red Devils went down to Trinity on Friday, in just the home team’s second win of 2023.
Salford were inept in attack without their first-choice spine and poor in defence.
“We knew that it would be do or die for Wakefield,” Rowley said.Â
“They’re used to this sort of jeopardy, cliff-edge sort of moment. We expected that, and so it was important we had a lot of enthusiasm and energy. So we got out-enthused, they did the basics better than us.
“It’s probably the worst performance since I’ve been in charge. It’s tough after a short turnaround from Wigan, but I don’t want to take away from a team that was desperate and played fantastically well.
“Players are busted, we have a small squad, it has an influence. But I won’t buy unto it. We had enough players out there to do a job, I’m disappointed.”
Asked if Salford would look to the transfer market for new signings, Rowley said: “I’m not really sure. As it stands we’ve got what we’ve got.”
The Red Devils have now lost three games in a row.
“We back ourselves every week,” he said.Â
“We don’t like losing, it’s as simple as that. It’s important we’re a good team, we will get stronger. We have to hold our nerve. We definitely won’t waver in our beliefs.”
Rowley believes Wakefield have what it takes to avoidd relegation.
“I do think Wakey can get out of it. They’re clearly got resource, they’ve brought some players in. Their destiny is in their own hands. I wish them well, but my concern is my team and what we did.”
