Featherstone owner Campbell arrested over alleged hammer attack

Exclusive: Featherstone Rovers owner Mark Campbell faced court in Leeds today after being charged with assault.

rugbyleaguehub.com Long Reads has been in touch with West Yorkshire Police and the charge relates to an incident on Station Lane, Featherstone, on Monday August 28.

Campbell was charged with section 18 assault, which is known as grievous bodily harm, with the offence including wounding with intent or with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The chairman of Featherstone appeared before Leeds Magistrates Court this morning,

According to the Wakefield Express, a 58-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman were arrested in Ackworth on Monday after a street fight in Station Lane.

In the incident, a 44-year-old man was allegedly hit with a hammer and taken to hospital. Read the Wakefield Express story here.

A source told rugbyleaguehub.com Long Reads that police cars were parked at Campbell’s house for a large part of Monday.

Both Campbell and Featherstone have been approached for comment, but have not responded at the time of writing.

The RFL declined to comment at this stage, but it is believed to be monitoring the situation.

Campbell played for Leeds, Sheffield, Feathertsone and Huddersfield in the 1980s. He has been a director of the Championship club since 2007.

UPDATED:

At 5.14pm today Featherstone released this statement: “Featherstone Rovers can confirm that its chairman Mark Campbell has been arrested in connection with an allegation which is denied.  He has been granted bail pending a future court appearance.  The club have been advised to make no further comment at this time.”
