Exclusive: Several Super League clubs have expressed their support for IMG’s recommendations on rejuvenating rugby league.

On Wednesday IMG presented its seven recommendations to the professional and semi-professional clubs in the first part of its partnership with the sport. The full list can be viewed here.

“It’s a very strong set of recommendations that covers all the key areas to grow the game,” Paul Lakin, Hull KR chief executive, told rugbyleaguehub.com Long Reads.

“Super League is something all clubs can aspire to if they invest in their stadium, their club infrastructure and on field squad personnel across all levels. It s a clear opportunity if clubs can attract the investment, the incentive being with an A grading you remain in the top tier.

“Having less games will also increase the chances of being able to field your strongest 17 each week, games becoming more competitive whilst assisting player welfare.

“We also like the clear slots in the annual calendar for the international game, a consistent positioning every year. For the game to thrive we absolutely need a stronger international game.”

Lakin said Hull KR will vote in favour of the recommendations.

Warrington boss Karl Fitzpatrick said he was “enthused” by the plans.

“There is still a lot of detail to work through but we are enthused on what was presented today,” he said.

“The on-field action rarely fails to disappoint but it’s a lot of the wrap around stuff, such as the marketing, fan engagement, match-day experience, digitalisation that has held the sport back. IMG have recognised that and see this as a priority for growth, this is refreshing and encouraging.

“The grading system, if the objectives are of the right threshold and are aligned to what the game needs, this should drive up standards. Hopefully, this system will ensure Clubs will progress, modernise and embrace change.

“There is a lot of work ahead and detail to work through but we are excited about this journey.”

Wakefield Trinity chairman John Minards also expressed his support.

“I very much welcome the recommendations overall,” he said.

“No-one will agree with everything proposed but we particularly value the emphasis of there being a place for all clubs that demonstrate an appetite to achieve high standards on and off the field.”
