NEW coach Jim Lenihan admits Huddersfield players are fatigued going into matches at the moment because he has dramatically stepped up their training.
But Lenihan says improving the Giants’ fitness is more important for long-term success than posting victories now.
“We are drastically underdone in our fitness compared to the top sides at the moment so it’s really hard to pick that up in-season,” Lenihan told Sky Sports after a 38-6 loss to St Helens on Sunday.
“And we’re training harder than we’ve done – we’ve got extra days in our week now to do more.
“We’ve just got to keep working harder and getting used to it. Give us a month, four weeks, five weeks, we’ll physically start catching up to it.
“We’re going into games fatigued now because of how much we’re working.”
Lenihan said quick results were not a priority, even going so far as to state: “It doesn’t matter if its 10 more weeks we don’t have a win. That’s not the important part to us at the moment.
“We’re on the journey of working through our own fatigue and getting better in that space.
“We’re building a game into us. We’re building a mentality into us and that’s not going to come quickly.
“It doesn’t come by cheating a quick try here and there.
“We’ve got to keep working harder at being fitter.”
