POPULAR but unwanted Hull FC coach John Cartwright will step down from his position but remain an employee of the club under a bizarre decision announced today.
As expected, Warrington assistant Steve McNamara will take over at MKM Stadium next year but no term was announced for him beyond 2027.
“Hull FC has paid a substantial transfer fee to secure McNamara’s services,” was something both Warrington and the Airlie Birds sought to stress in their statements earlier today (Friday).
“Both clubs will continue to work closely to ensure a smooth transition at the conclusion of the current season.”
Andy Last will take over as caretaker coach at Hull FC.
“Hull FC can also confirm that John Cartwright has stepped away from his day-to-day duties as head coach with immediate effect,” the statement said, making last night’s 24-14 loss to St Helens his last match in the job.
“John remains an employee of Hull FC, and the club would like to place on record its sincere thanks for his efforts during his time as head coach at Hull FC.”
CEO Richie Myler was quoted as saying: “We are delighted to secure Steve’s services. He is a coach of the highest calibre and someone who truly understands this club and the city.
“Steve McNamara coming home is a powerful moment for Hull FC.”
Owner Andrew Thirkill said in the media release: “We believe Steve is the right person to lead Hull FC into our next phase and are thrilled with his appointment.
“His experience, leadership and standards will be critical as we build a team capable of competing consistently at the top of Super League.”
Warrington CEO Karl Fitzpatrick also had his say, commenting: “Steve has made a significant contribution during his short time with us and we thank him for his commitment.
“While we are naturally disappointed to see him leave at the end of the season, we respect his decision and wish him every success in his new role.”
