FORMER England captain Jack Welsby made a successful return from a shoulder injury as St Helens accelerated away from brave York at the death.
With an hour played at Brewdog Stadium, the Knights were snapping at Saints’ heals. But a try to newly re-signed Alex Walmsley kicked them clear and then they put their foot down for a comfortable 40-16 win.
Welsby was named on the bench for his return ahead of the Challenge Cup semis next week and came on in the second half to enthusiastic applause.
Loaned for a week from Hull KR once more, Bill Leyland posted the first try of the match with Daryl Clarke seemingly rested.
Nene McDonald was another star who returned from injury but there was bad news too for coach Paul Rowley, with a HIA ruling winger Kyle Feldt out of next week’s Challenge Cup semi-final against Wigan.
