IRELAND put their foot on the accelerator late in a tightly contested wheelchair World Cup game against Wales, Joseph Calcott helping them keep an unbeaten record.

With 18 minutes left at WIN Entertainment Centre, the Irish led just 32-28 in the most tightly contested match of the tournament so far.

But as rain storms closed in on Wollongong, Cian Horgan kicked off a flood of Wolfhounds points with his second try.

His third came just three minutes later, with Calcott soon posing his fifth and then three minutes from time, his sixth.

Horgan’s final haul was four touchdowns in a 68-28 triumph. The Wolfhounds did not win a match at the last World Cup.

In the final round this Friday, the Irish take on the might of England while the Welsh meet the struggling United States.

“We’re here to make a statement,” Calcott, who scored seven tries against the US, said.
